Hostos Community College Renovation: First Floor and New Dental Clinic
Bradford Construction Corporation was selected as the construction manager for the interior renovation of the main building of the Eugenio María de Hostos Community College of the City University of New York (CUNY). The project scope called for the creation of a new lobby, the build-out of a 25-chair state-of-the-art dental clinic, asbestos abatement and upgrades to bring the building up to code in key areas. Renovation of the College's trailers was also part of the project.
The main building required asbestos abatement of the existing VATs and counter tops. Demolition work was necessary to remove an unused dental clinic and associated lab storage and office rooms on the 4th floor, requiring re-routing existing pipe systems for hot and cold water and waste that passed through the 4th floor with new drains and piping for pumps. Bradford outfitted six new classrooms.Electric service was refurbished with the installation of new electrical power panels, lighting, outlets and switches, data outlets with cabling and a full fire alarm system (heads, strobes, pull boxes) with a panel. A new air handler system with return fan, pumps, ductwork and Honeywell control system was also put into service. A lab table supplying gas, electric service and water was part of the package. Final building exterior work included roof membrane repair.
The restrooms in the school's trailers on Walton Avenue were stripped down to the framing to build Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)-compliant mens and ladies' rooms, incorporating new plumbing fixtures, piping, ceilings, stall partitions and accessories, VCT flooring, exhaust fans and lighting. Trailer classrooms were rebuilt with new lighting, windows and VCT floors. A complete new fire alarm system was installed.
Bradford completed the project by planting new shrubs and trees and by power-washing exterior surfaces.
