Hostos Community College Memorial Plaza Commemorative
Bradford was selected by the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York (DASNY) as the construction manager for the building of Memorial Plaza at Hostos Community College, which was conceived and designed to commemorate the victims of the September 11, 2001, attacks and American Airlines Flight 587 that crashed shortly afterward in Queens, NY.
Memorial Plaza is situated between the East Academic Complex and the 500 Grand Concourse Building. Design elements incorporate low, curved walls that were inspired by detailing discovered in an existing perimeter fence that was relocated along the interior of the plaza and integrated into the plaza’s garden landscaping.
Initial work included demolition of an existing plaza with concrete surface and steps. The grounds were excavated to place new footings to support the curved walls that created planting areas for all new landscaping. A complete new drainage system with floor drains was installed. The heart of the project was the construction of a 10x50-foot granite wall engraved with the names of the victims. Added was a water flow over the wall that cascades into a reflecting pool. The plaza area was covered with new pavers, and architectural fencing and a new main gate were also built. Benches, a drinking fountain, memorial plaques and outdoor lighting were installed in the garden.
Bradford collaborated with the memorial’s designer and WBE company, Goshow Architects, and managed the work of the minority and women-owned subcontractors, who built the plaza in its entirety.
